Chelsea
Chelsea has it all: art, nightlife, shopping, and recreation at the Piers. And, of course, a happening gay scene.
Since the mid-1990s, Chelsea has become a center of the New York art scene, as an increasing number of art galleries have moved there from SoHo. From 16th Street to 27th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, there are more than 200 art galleries that are home to modern art from upcoming artists and respected artists as well. Some of the most famous include the Gagosian Gallery on West 24th, the Matthew Marks Gallery on West 22nd, and the Sonnabend on West 22nd
Chelsea is a hotspot for nightlife in Manhattan. The 27th Street holds some of the cities most notorious clubs such as Marquee, Cain and Bungalow 8. These nightclubs have become especially popular because of the celebrity sightings. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and many others are regulars at many of these clubs. Chelsea has a large gay population; Eighth Avenue is the center for gay culture.
The Chelsea Piers has something for everyone – golf, bowling, skating and rock climbing. Kids’ programs include soccer, gymnastics, baseball, and more. You’ll also find a fitness center and a deluxe spa. Take your bike or roller-blades down to the Hudson River Esplanade for more green grass and river views
Explore Chelsea’s past by visiting landmarks such as the Chelsea Historic District (20th to 22nd St. between 8th and 10th Ave.), where you’ll see architecture from the 1800’s. Don’t miss the Chelsea Hotel, bohemian landmark and former home of writers and artists such as William S. Burroughs and Bob Dylan.
